Welcome to the Gotham and the Sacred.
My name is Christopher Young, and this online place is my personal space for reflection on the most profound questions shaping modern life, questions of meaning, authority, morality, and transcendence. Drawing from theology, philosophy, economics, and sociology, I explore how ideas form civilizations, how moral frameworks rise and collapse, how modernity has reshaped our understanding of the sacred, the human person, and social order; and most important of all, I explore the nature of God, and how the sacred texts influence our lives as believers, and even for those non-believers.
Rather than treating these disciplines in isolation, this work approaches them as interwoven fabrics through which we can better understand the crises and possibilities of our age. What follows are not final answers, but disciplined inquiries, attempts to think clearly about God, culture, markets, power, and the soul in a world increasingly unsure of what it believes, yet unable to live without belief.
I will also provide book reviews, personal videos, or curated content drawn from other online resources.
A short introduction to me. I have a career attention-deficit disorder, and because of this, I have been able to cross multiple industries and careers over my lifetime. I have worked as a professor and testifying expert on all things economics and ethics, and have worked in investment banking and private equity, and even done my fair share of Fortune 500 executive work. My most exciting thing in life, outside of my family, is to think seriously about the sacred and the secular, and how faith and God intersect with all things in the physical world. I have a Ph.D., M.B.A., and B.F.A., and am working toward an M.A. in Christian apologetics and ethics, as well as an M.A. in psychology. As you can probably tell, I am a very interdisciplinary thinker - yet no topic is more important to me than the understanding God (should that be possible), and my relationship to Him. I am an unapologetic Christian, believe in Christian values, and accept every word of the Bible as an inspired word of God.
I have written two books, Addie's Ascent: A Story of Hope, and The Correlates of Right-Wing Extremism. At some point, you will be able to locate a link to these books on this blog.
